Mary Frederickson [ resume ] [ website ]
In a body of work spanning over twenty-five feature films, Mary Frederickson has established herself as a respected Production Designer in the independent film world. Mary is dedicated to incorporating novel methods and looks in her designs and is passionate about using sustainable and recyclable textiles and materials in her sets.
Mary has just signed on to design the upcoming feature "Trust Us," a story of friendship, time travel and deceit. She recently designed a film in Memphis, entitled, "Losers Take All," a comedy depicting the travails of "The Fingers", a fictional indie DIY punk-rock band circa 1986. Prior to that project, she helped bring "Theo," a powerful environmental drama to life. The film centers on Theo, an Inuit polar bear tracker who witnesses firsthand the rapid destruction of the Arctic ice. He is selected by his village elders to embark on a selfless mission to the "South" to save their home and way of life.
Other past notable projects include "Down the Shore," a drama starring James Gandolfini and Famke Janssen, and "Winter of Frozen Dreams," a 1970's period thriller featuring Thora Birch and Keith Carradine. Mary received recognition as the Production and Costume Designer for "Homework," winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature at the 2004 Slamdance Film Festival.
Mary also designs commercials and music videos. In this past year she collaborated on campaigns for a diverse number of brands including Downy, Febreze, Lean Pockets, NASCAR, and Lux Hair Products.
Mary's working style is methodical and calculated and her sets have been described as sculptural in nature. She likens her creative process to the reseeding of her favorite tree in the Northern Minnesotan border town of her childhood. The Jack Pine's cones only open in the intense heat of a forest fire. In the same poetic style Mary is always looking for an intense narrative catalyst. She loves to empower a story by driving the visuals from the theoretical to the real.
When Mary is not exploring ways to tell stories visually, she is creating custom wearable conversation pieces out of recycled fabrics, vintage linens and other salvaged items. Mary loves projects, and she is always completely immersed in one.
Mary is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829. She is represented by Creative Entertainment Connections in New York.
